Earth House – June 2025: Building the Roof

by 30th Jun, 2025

The oak frame and roof structure are now all in place. We almost have a complete structure now, as the building takes its form and comes to life.

But it’s not all oak and earth at the Earth House. We’re using stainless steel posts against the curved glazing, in order to maximise the views into the landscape. These are being installed too, and they will hold up the green oak beams.

To top it all off – literally – the roofing material is starting to be applied to protect the frame from the elements, and preparations are being made for the final roof finishes, including a ‘green’ roof with zinc detailing, to be installed.

While this happens, planting season for the wildflowers begins alongside the public footpath next to the site, all carried out by Liz from Eco House. More planting is also being added to the pond and ‘swale’ – a shallow channel with gently sloping sides that helps to reduce flooding.

The landscaping has also been planted with meadow grass, which is further enriched with wildflower plugs, following a design by Robert Myers Associates. This landscape plan ensures the field is planted, radial hedgerows included to give privacy to the footpath and house, and trees added, in order to create a new ‘Herefordshire green’ lane that enables anyone to enjoy the enhanced local landscape.
