Earth House – October 2024 Update

by 31st Oct, 2024

The crescent takes shape as the rammed earth shuttering begins. This will form the back walls of the kitchen and living room elements of the house.

The house will be a significant piece of contemporary architecture which shows how open-plan kitchen, living and dining areas can interact with a stunning view and landscape. To achieve this, we have designed a glazed crescent living space, which frames the view whilst allowing light, access and views from the house deep into the landscape.

The key idea for this living area is to create a space that is backdropped by the view into the woodland, hills and estate lands the project sits within, and also into the wider landscape. The crescent shape at once creates a dynamic space, while ensuring privacy with the adjacent footpath. The ‘spine’ of the cruciform plan will contain a wing with an entrance and central study, bedrooms and bathrooms. A circulation zone connects these spaces to the main crescent living space of the house.

The main view is complimented by discrete, framed views from these other spaces in the house. These secondary views are far more intimate. However, due to the design and topography of the site, these views are all contained within the site and do not overlook the public footpath, the adjacent highway or neighbouring properties. This ensures that everyone can enjoy the enhanced landscape without intrusion.
