Earth House – May 2024 Update

by 31st May, 2024

It’s now May 2024. While April saw the landscaping begin to take shape, with the gentle scooping out from the ground, now it’s time to begin the building itself.

Traditionally, vernacular buildings are built from the very materials that they stand on, whether it be the oak trees or the lime or stone that comes out of the ground. We want to carry this tradition forward. However, then the question we had was how to create a vernacular house that’s true to today? That’s where our plans for the frame and wall come in.

Firstly, this house overlooks a beautiful wood on the estate that contains oak trees. We were able to harvest 31 of these oak trees.. These will be sawn at a local saw mill and the timber later cut and jointed in a local specialist oak framing workshop to provide the oak frame of the house.

Secondly, Hereford is famous for its beautiful red earth. In order to continue the vernacular tradition, we will use this earth to create rammed earth walls. But more on that to come!
