Earth House – June 2024 Update

by 30th Jun, 2024

We can now see the plan of the house set in the landscape, and the grounds are taking shape. Even the ha-ha, part of the garden design, is now evident.

The building design has been carefully considered with the surrounding landscape in mind. The design will ensure the building is ‘lowered’ into the landscape, allowing a wildflower roof to step down and into the wildflower pasture to the rural-facing east. This single-storey design also features minor earthwork reductions that ‘settle’ the house into the landscape, which along with the low-slung roofline and use of sympathetic materials, will reduce the perceived size of the building.

New planting of native trees, hedges and hedgerow trees will contribute positively to the character of the local landscape. A pond and swale will also provide an enhancement for aquatic flora and fauna, and we will plant shrubs and plants to set the new house into its setting. Our overall approach will be to place native, wildlife-friendly flora and fauna that are locally-sourced, and reinforce existing species found on the estate.
