Earth House – July 2024 Update

by 31st Jul, 2024

The reinforced concrete slab is being laid. For this, we used locally-sourced recycled aggregate for the sub-base. For roadways on the site, we are able to make use of the estate’s very own quarry. While this does not provide building stone, it provides a supply of gravel which is suitable for the construction of sub-base of these roads.

When it comes to the slab, concrete is of course a carbon-intensive material. However, as part of the estate’s commitment, there is an ongoing programme of planting woodland will has been scaled to offset the initial carbon impact of the project. Over the project’s lifetime, this is intended to sequester more carbon from the atmosphere than both the building and running of the house will ever involve.

In this way, the project can provide a positive contribution to the global climate challenge we currently face.
