It’s April 2024, and the digging continues. The extent of the proposed landscaping is starting to emerge. We worked with award-winning landscape architect Robert Myers Associates to ensure the architecture of the landscape and house came together to deliver this exceptional house in an exceptional landscape.
The project’s landscape design is distinctive. In order to create this design, we took our hints from the surroundings. We wanted to maintain the established view from the nearby public footpath to the hill, whilst at the same time enhancing the physical experience of walking along this path. We also needed to base the design around this view without causing any negative outcomes for the National Landscape in terms of impact on views or character.
With the landscape being so varied, we have planned for a seamless transition between the eastern ‘zone’ of the garden and the wider agricultural area to the east and north-east. The ha-ha will act as a separator between the existing field and a nectar-rich wildflower grassland meadow. The eastern boundary will not be defined on the ground, allowing the continued use of the site as a partial grazing field.
The footpath will be transformed into a woodland glade, adding to the experience of the route. This glade will have radial planted hedges seeded with wildflowers, which will open up into views of the landscape. This subtly protects and enhances people’s views and privacy by adding to the experience of architecture within the landscape, which is a key part of the requirements of an exceptional house.
